Today I learned something quite interesting on the life coach training course.
No matter how great the urge is, you must NOT give your opinion. You need to allow your client to find their own answers inside of them. In my opinion this is totally true. Even if you feel that you know the answer to your clients problem.
The reason you don’t want to give them your opinion is because your opinions are based on your life experiences and your perception. If you can help dig the answer out of your client, then you are helping them in more ways than one.
Firstly, they come to the answer on their own which will be their own idea, and they are way more likely to act upon it because it was their idea. (This is not to be confused with manipulation, which never works in the long run and in the end has a negative outcome.)
Secondly, you are training your client to get the answers for themselves. It is your job as a life coach to help your client become self sustaining and not always looking to someone else for their answers.
Now the question comes to my mind, how do you do this and not let my opinions get involved? Well, this I can’t answer right now, so hopefully the answer will be revealed later in the course.
But up to this point in my life coach training, so far there has been some very good information in this package and I would recommend anyone interested in life coaching to take this course. Even if you don’t plan to make a profession as a life coach.

Update: There are example from other life coaches that more clearly illustrates this point. They give you a good idea of guiding and not offering advice.
